Finding a fossilized bone is just the beginning! Fossils are often very fragile and need to be removed with extreme care. Below are pictures of an excavation we did during the summer of 2025. We took our time, determining the perimeter of the bone, excavated around it, and partially excavated below to pedestalize the bone. Next, we placed a layer of foil around the bone and cut enough burlap into strips to cover it twice. Now it was time for the messy part! We soaked each strip individually in plaster and placed them around what we had revealed, completely covering the entire bone and remaining matrix down to the pedestal. Then came the moment of truth! It was time to flip the bone over. Did we get all the bone? After checking both areas of separation, we confirmed we got it all! Now it was time to wrap it with plastic and carry it back to our vehicle!
